Meet Mati

I’m Dr. Mati Sicherer, a Licensed Professional Counselor, sex therapist and couple’s therapist based in Fair Lawn, NJ. I specialize in working with adults and couples navigating relationship challenges, intimacy issues, parenting stress, and the complexities of ADHD and neurodivergence. My therapy approach is warm, inclusive, and deeply affirming of all identities and neurotypes.

Recognizing that each person is the expert in their own life experiences, I collaborate with my clients to uncover meaningful paths toward personal growth and change.

My Professional Background

I have a Masters Degree in Counseling and am licensed as an LPC. I also hold a Doctorate in Special Education and have spent over two decades deeply involved in the world of learning differences, neurodiversity, and advocacy, including writing two books on the subject. My academic and clinical work is supported by advanced training in sex therapy and the Gottman Method for couples therapy. This combination of specialties allows me to support the whole person—recognizing the interplay between identity, relationships, and life experiences.

Whether we’re unpacking the challenges of intimacy, navigating communication in a neurodiverse partnership, or supporting your role as a parent and advocate in the special education system, I’m here to walk alongside you with care and expertise.

Animal Assisted Therapy with Louie

You’ll often meet Louie, my certified therapy dog, in sessions. His calming, grounded presence helps ease anxiety and creates a sense of safety—especially during emotionally vulnerable conversations. Louie plays a key role in animal-assisted therapy, helping clients feel more connected, regulated, and emotionally supported.

My Philosophy

I believe therapy should be a space for embracing who you are—not a process of trying to “fix” what society views as broken. I work from a neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed perspective, grounded in the social model of disability rather than a pathologizing one. This means I view differences not as deficits, but as variations in human experience. My approach centers on understanding and accepting each person’s unique neurobiology, context, and identity.

I believe that many struggles we label as “disorders” are often the result of environments that aren’t designed for diverse ways of thinking, feeling, or relating. Therapy, in this light, becomes a collaborative process of discovery, self-compassion, and empowerment—not “fixing” what’s broken, but nurturing what’s already resilient and wise.

My work is inclusive and affirming of all identities, and I am especially attuned to the intersections of neurodivergence, gender, sexuality, and family systems.

Why I Do This Work

This work is deeply personal to me.

As someone who is neurodivergent themselves AND has walked alongside loved ones with neurodivergence and complex needs, I know the joy and the heartbreak, the advocacy fatigue, and the strength it takes to show up every day. I’ve seen firsthand how hard it can be to find support that truly “gets it”—especially when you’re juggling caregiving, systems navigation, and your own needs.

I created this practice to be a refuge. A place where people feel seen in their fullness. A space where couples can reconnect, parents can breathe, and individuals can heal and grow—on their own terms.

If you’re ready to begin or continue your journey, I’d be honored to work with you.
